When a pledge needs to be deleted instead of adjusted or stopped, and it has pledge payments already assigned to it, all of the payments get deleted too. The payments need to be re-entered as gifts. Presently, it's so easy to convert a gift to a pledge, but there's no way to convert a payment to a gift.
