Allow existing gifts to be converted to payments

Currently when a donor who has an existing pledge goes online to pay that pledge, it lands in eTapestry as a gift. Chat support confirmed that there is no way to apply this gift to an existing pledge. The recommended process is:

  1. Reverse the gift entry
  2. Create a new payment entry
  3. Enter the credit card information (last four digits, card type, exp date) which is required to complete the entry OR enter fake information (not helpful when talking to a donor and they ask what card something was run on)
    • It's worth noting that the credit card field does not allow copying and pasting, so you need to memorize or write down any information you want to transfer
  4. Save the new entry, resulting in three journal entries (gift, reversal, payment) to represent a single payment

If you have any quantity of pledges and leverage online payments, this process becomes overwhelming and is likely to include human error. Manually re-entering data diminishes the impact of having a database.

An additional suggestion on chat was to ask donors to set up recurring monthly payments to pay off existing pledges. I recognize that there are ways to have payments originate and be connected to the gift, but in a donor-centered fundraising shop, it is not appropriate to ask donors to fulfill pledges in a specific way to streamline our jobs.

I am frustrated that this in not an option! You should be able to assign any gift or payment to a pledge even recurring online payments.

Yes, it would make much more sense to be able to assign the payment/gift to the donors pledge rather than reverse or delete the transaction.

    Please consider, thank you!
