In a situation where a charity wants to include donor names as recognition to a specific campaign, the charity must ask the donor's permission - they need a yes or a no and they need preferred recognition name.  When someone makes a gift online, its logical that the form would include a section to gather information on recognition.  Although there is a system defined field under the journal gift tab for recognition, you cannot pull that into a DIY form.  Thus, to collect recogntion details at the same time as someone makes a gift, you must create secondary UDFs for recognition that are usable in a DIY form.   Seems redundant and an oversight on best practices for donor experience.
