US clients not being able edit PDF labels

I edit PDF address labels for my thank you letters all the time and now I cannot. Apparently we cannot do it here because it is not allowed in Canada. This is a huge inconvenience to me.  We are two different countries and US clients should not be penalized for something required in Canada.

I often use PDF reports "dropped" from eTapestry as part of larger PDF documents.  I can no longer do that with ease with security settings.  It would be great to be able to produce PDFs without the security settings.  Instead of making the security feature mandatory, could it be an optional feature for the user?  A user could then secure a report or not based on how the report will be used.

Thank you for getting back with you. I just want to let you know that I got the information that the change was made to accommodate the Canadian requirement when I live chatted.
The reasons I like to edits are:

    1. Sometimes the name does not fit on one line, it wraps to the 2nd line.

    2. If I have a couple say Mr. John Smith and Ms. Susan Jones they show up on one line and I like them on two.

    3. If a donor says they work for ABC company, that shows up on the label, even though the thank you is going to their house.

    4. If a Church makes a donation it just shows up the envelope salutation, not the Church name.
If you have tips on how to fix these that would be great. I would really appreciate it.

Hi Mike, yes, this google drive option does work, thanks for the email! This solves my problem. Converting it to a Word doc doesn’t work, but I can add a heading/title in google docs. It doesn’t add the header to each page, but as long as it’s on the first page that’s fine. And I could copy it to the other pages I suppose, so I’m happy now. ☺

I thought they were suggesting a Word document solution where I would download an excel spreadsheet and do a mail merge – and that’s not as simple as creating the directory in etap.

    Again, I appreciate the help!

First of all, let me explain why the change.  We made this change in order to close a legal loop hole regarding eReceipts. This is NOT just a Canadian requirement.  By their nature, PDF’s are not supposed to be able to be edited, but we had allowed that to happen originally and we needed to make the change.

Secondly, I would like to better understand why using the Word document option does not work for you.  Please feel free to contact me directly regarding this.

You can convert the encrypted PDF to a Word Doc using Google Drive.  I’m sure there are programs out there that allow you do this with few steps and greater accuracy, but this solution doesn’t cost anything and it doesn’t require someone to install any programs.

    • Go to: https://www.google.com/drive/
      • The user may need to log in with their gmail account or create one to get started
    • Once you’re on the My Drive page, drag the PDF file to upload it
      • Or you can click New > File Upload and select the PDF that way
    • Click on the PDF to highlight it
    • Then click on the more actions icon in the upper right-hand corner (it looks like a vertical ellipsis) > Open With > DocHub
    • Once you have the PDF open in DocHub, click on the menu in the upper right-hand corner (it looks like three horizontal lines) > Download > Download DOC

Thank you for all of the feedback, we will continue to look at how to better improve eTapestry.

This is a problem for me too. I was creating photo directories for our various classes, and adding a heading to the pdf. Now it is "secured" and asks for a password, but apparently there is no password. Can you just give us a password that we could use so we can edit the PDF?

I create PDFs of the e-alerts we send and then combine them into a large PDF as part of a required report for a funder. With the security settings, I can't do that anymore. It would be helpful to be able to create PDFs without the security settings.
